Senior Community Day, June 1
"Sieze life! Eat bread with gusto; dress festively every morning. Don't skimp on colors and scarves. Relish life with the spouse you love each and every day of your precarious life. Each day is God's gift. It's all you get in exchange for the hard work of staying alive. Make the most of each one! Whatever turns up, grab it and do it. And heartily!" —Ecclesiastes 9:7-9 (The Message) "Once you're over the hill, you begin to pick up speed." —Charles M. Schultz From the creator of the world, to the not-so-powerful creator of "Peanuts," we hear the message of "sieze the day." On Friday, June 1, the perfect opportunity to embrace this message will present itself for our senior adults: The 7th Annual Senior Community Day, hosted by Central, and presented by the Lakeshore Area Senior Marketing Group. From 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the focus will be products, services and education designed especially for seniors, their caregivers and families. Free seminars, free health screenings, over 70 resource booths and door prizes are all planned for the day. Choose one seminar from three different time frames—all helping you in diverse areas of your life: financial, physical, recreational, emotional and more. There is no registration fee to attend! Here is the schedule: Senior Community Day Schedule8:30-9 a.m. Registration 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Visit Resource Booths 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Health Screenings 9:45-10:30 a.m. Session 1 11-11:45 a.m. Session 2/Lunch A 12:15-1 p.m. Session 3/Lunch B 1:30-2 p.m. Door prizes Advance registration is only necessary for lunch and to reserve your free seminars. Summer in The Half Mile
What is The Half Mile?
If you were to take a compass drawing tool and draw a circle around our church with a radius of 1/2 mile, you'd define The Half Mile. As a church we have committed to being a great neighbor to the half-mile area around our church. We currently are focusing our time and resources to the apartment complexes to the west of Central Wesleyan. This summer there are a number of opportunities to get involved in the neighborhood around Central. Each Tuesday and Thursday there are two opportunities to serve: 12:15-2 p.m. Come hang out with some great kids (usually elementary-age and younger) in our neighborhood. We need volunteers to play games and do crafts that go along with Bible stories. This serving opportunity is ideal for all ages. We ask that if kids are coming to serve alone, they be 6th grade and above. Tuesdays are at Harbor Village Apartments (287 W. 40th St.) and Thursdays are at Meadowlanes Townhomes (287 Meadowlane Dr.). 6-8 p.m. Each evening we will aim to connect with many of the older kids in the neighborhood as well as the younger. We need volunteers to lead games, play on the playground and grill hot dogs. On Thursdays at Harbor Village we will partner with The Motion Initiative, and organization that uses bikes and bike repair to initiate mentor relationships with kids in the neighborhood. This opportunity is ideal for families of all ages. Tuesdays are at Meadowlanes Townhomes (287 Meadowlane Dr.) and Thursdays are at Harbor Village Apartments (287 W. 40th St.). Come join the work God is already doing in our neighborhood. These opportunities are easy ways to get yourself and/or your family involved in serving! But even if you can't get involved, we need your prayers. This summer, pray that:
- These opportunities will lead to relationships formed with our neighbors.
- These opportunities will be a catalyst for people from Central Wesleyan Church to continue serving on a regular basis.
To sign up, or if you have questions, contact Chris Hofland at 616.395.3102. Your Half MileBy the way, we'd love you to draw a radius around your house and committ to being a great neighbor to the houses around you!

Crisis Can Turn your Life Upside-Down
Mary was already struggling after losing her job when her mother died. Now she feels herself drowning in grief over her losses. She doesn't know where to turn.
Everyone has experienced some kind of life challenge: the loss of a job, the death of a loved one, a serious illness, a divorce, etc. Many suffer alone, but this was never God's intention. In Galatians 6:2 we are told to "bear one another's burdens are thereby fulfill the law of Christ." This is why being in fellowship with other Christians is so important. Many people are loved and cared for in small groups, but others may not have any support at all.
Stephen Ministers are trained, supervised care givers, willing to help people who are struggling and in need of care through the crises in life.
If you, or someone you know, could benefit from someone confidentially listening and walkind beside you through a difficult stretch of life, or if you might be interested in information about how you could begin training to become a "distinctively Christian" caregiver, call Holly at 616.395.3138 or email her at hleblanc@centralwesleyan.org.

Thanks for Being the Church
Biblical writers often compare opposites to illustrate and teach godly concepts of wisdom and truth. When Samuel wanted to teach the people that loving God was more important than just going through religious motions he said, "To obey is better than sacrifice." Or, when Solomon wanted to praise harmony in a loving home he said, "Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it."
These juxtapositions are a wonderful way to better understand important concepts. The writer of Ecclesiastes uses such a technique to illustrate the wonderful blessing of a godly partnership. The preacher tells the story of a man who is all alone; he works very hard and accumulates great wealth. As the man looks back over his life he considers his hard work and even his wealth to be rather meaningless as he considers that he is alone.
As the writer applies this story, he reminds us that two are better than one because together we can accomplish much more than any of us can accomplish on our own. The value of a partnership is more than just what we accomplish, however—it is also helping each other when we are in need. If one falls, the other will pick the fallen up; if one is under attack, the other will help.
Although this illustration of partnership is often applied to a marriage relationship, it is also a picture of the Church. By joining the collective resources, gifts and graces of the Church, we take on the characteristics of a mighty army. It is exciting and thrilling to think of what we can accomplish when we work together in a godly partnership as the true Church of Jesus Christ.
Thank you for being the Church. Thank you for contributing your resources and using your gifts so that collectively we have been able to experience great accomplishments for the glory of God. Thank you for being a representative of Jesus Christ in a fallen world, and thank you for helping those believers who have fallen and investing in those who have not yet opened their hearts to Jesus. Thank you for being in partnership with the true Church of Jesus Christ.
Lynn Bruce Executive Pastor of Operations

The Plunge 2012 Saturday, May 19
The Plunge is our annual community service day, and it provides us with an opportunity to serve others in our neighborhoods. Central Wesleyan's mission is to become fully devoted followers of Christ as we build redemptive bridges of influence to reach Holland and beyond. This is a day where we intentionally build bridges to our community through service. If you have never "plunged," ask someone about it... it's a day you will not want to miss!
How does the Plunge work? First, you'll need to gather a group. A group may consist of family members, Community Groups, your Small Group or even just a neighbor or two. Invite someone who may not be comfortable coming to the church building to serve with you. There's no better way to show others the Church in action. So it's a great way to serve and be a witness at the same time! Everyone wants to be part of something significant.
Second, figure out where your group will "plunge." You can create your own project based on the needs of your neighborhood, work or community. Use your eyes and ears to figure out the needs that are around you. Consider and plan what your group can do to meet those specific needs.
Third, register your project at theplungeonline.org. If you're having a hard time coming up with a project idea, you can sign up for an existing project—either in the Main Lobby on a Sunday beginning April 29, or at theplungeonline.org. Past projects have consisted of raking, painting, fixing, cleaning, sewing, sweeping, mowing, organizing and more. The deadline to sign up is May 15. Once signed up, a team leader will contact you to provide you with the details of the group project you signed up for.
In years past, The Plunge has made a significant impact on the people and community of Holland. God has used our congregation to not only help with physical needs, but with spiritual needs as well. Through this servant-evangelism project, you will be an incredible instrument for growing God's kingdom. Last year we had 850+ people who worked on over 40 projects in one day!
On the day of the Plunge (Saturday, May 19), plan on beginning your day by attending the Plunge Rally at 8:15 a.m. in the Worship Center (and get your free t-shirt)! Visit theplungeonline.org for more information, or call Chris at 616.395.3102 with any questions. See you there!
