Major Global Thrusts

bombali-banaBombali Bana, Sierra Leone
In January, 2010 Central Wesleyan began a three-year partnership with the people of Bombali Bana, Sierra Leone to see transformational development in their village. Through this we wish to help improve their lives and enlarge the Kingdom of God. As the poorest country in the world, life expectancy in Sierra Leone has dropped to 34 years.

Our partnership will help the village leadership and the Wesleyan church leaders in six areas: agriculture, education, community health, leadership mentoring, anti-trafficking and spiritual formation.

Most important of all, we hope to change their worldview to one that they can identify their own problems in their village and come up with their own solutions, using their own resources. Then they will be able to solve future problems knowing they are blessed by God.

KarisKaris Project
Reaching Muslim people in a Central Asian country through long-term missionaries, strategic partnerships and short-term teams. We are working to improve the quality of life for the Karis people by building schools, teaching English and computer technology, as well as bringing them the gospel and starting churches among them. We usually take a mission trip every year with a team. If you'd like to join us to help out on a short-term basis and to learn more about what we are doing, check out the short-term missions page.

BhojpuriBhojpuri

When Central Wesleyan launched its annual mission emphasis almost 30 years ago, we began to hear from missionaries about “unreached people groups.” We learned that there were thousands of groups of people who had never heard of the name of Jesus. We asked God what one church in Michigan could do to share the gospel message with people in far-off lands.

We sensed that we should pray for the mostly Muslim Bhojpuri people of north India, a group of over 35 million people. This was a population greater than all of the people living in the Great Lakes states here in the United States. The state of Bihar, home to the Bhojpuri, is the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and the hyper-nationalistic movements of India. In the 100-year history of missionary work among the Bhojpuri, there has been very little fruit, with possibly 500 believers. Bihar has been commonly known as the “graveyard of missionaries.”

Our prayers led us to partner in 1992 with HCJB Radio to broadcast first weekly, then daily radio programs. This was the only broadcast of anything in the Bhojpuri language. Then in 1994 we partnered with India Gospel League to support a team to travel from southern to northern India to share the Jesus film. The team would show the film at night, meet with people interested in knowing more about Christ the next day and then move to another village. Once every two weeks members of the team would loop back to the villages to hold Bible studies. When there were 25 baptized believers in a village, a church would be started. Across America, unknown to us, other churches began to also pray for the Bhojpuri.

A church planting movement has resulted in 30,000 churches in Bihar, and over one million believers have been baptized. A dozen Muslim imams are now baptized church planters, and prayer groups are meeting in mosques. Still, the reality is that these one million believers represent less than one percent of India. A significant task remains: more than 150,000 Bhojpuri villages are unreached and work on the Old Testament translation remains unfinished. And—beyond the Bhojpuri—yet another 120 million Muslims throughout the rest of India still need to hear the gospel. Your prayers and financial gifts to Faith Promise Giving are making a difference to bring change to the world.
